Empowering Pregnant Moms for Hospital Birth with Birth Classes Online
Learn How to Be Your Own Advocate
Hospital birth can be an empowering, informed, deeply connected experience, but only when you feel confident using your voice.
That’s why so many families turn to birth classes online to prepare not just for labor itself, but for the conversations, decisions, and advocacy moments that shape their entire birth story.
Let's walk through how to start advocating for yourself now, long before labor begins, so you enter the hospital feeling grounded, informed, and respected every step of the way.
If Advocating for Yourself Feels Intimidating, You’re Not Alone
So many expecting moms share the same quiet worry: "What if I freeze up or don’t know what to ask?”
Or perhaps you’ve already experienced a rushed appointment, unclear explanations, or the feeling that you needed permission to speak up. These concerns don’t mean you’re unprepared. They simply mean you care deeply about having a birth that reflects your values and needs.
Advocacy is a skill, and just like labor positions or breathing techniques, it can be learned! That’s exactly why I created my evidence-based birth class online, to help you build confidence long before you step into the hospital.
Ever wondered how the heck you’re going to speak up for your wants in labor?
Inside Episode 3 of Your Birth Bestie podcast, you will uncover tangible tips to help you be your greatest advocate to support a powerful, autonomous hospital birth.
Start Self-Advocacy in Prenatal Care
Advocacy begins long before labor.
Your prenatal appointments are the perfect place to practice using your voice, asking questions, and establishing a collaborative relationship with your provider.
Here’s How to Start:
1. Ask Open-Ended Questions
Instead of “Is this okay?” try:
“Can you walk me through my options?”
“How will we make decisions together during labor?”
“What is your approach to induction, epidurals, or VBAC?”
These questions reveal your provider’s philosophy and help you understand how aligned they are with your goals.
2. Share Your Values Early and Often
You might say:
“Autonomy is very important to me.”
“I want to avoid unnecessary interventions when possible.”
“I want to stay mobile and follow my instincts in labor.”
Repeating your values throughout pregnancy sets a clear foundation for how you want to be treated on the day of your birth.
3. Bring a Partner or Support Person Into the Conversation
Your support team can reinforce your preferences and help you remember the details. This creates continuity from prenatal visits straight into your birth experience.
Advocacy isn’t about conflict. It’s about collaboration!
Knowing Your Rights and Using Tools Like B.R.A.I.N Changes Everything
One of the biggest confidence-builders I teach in my birth classes online is the B.R.A.I.N. decision-making framework.
When an intervention is suggested, B.R.A.I.N. helps you slow down, gather information, and stay centered.
Use B.R.A.I.N. to Guide Any Decision in Labor
B – Benefits: How will this help me or my baby?
R – Risks: What are the potential downsides or side effects?
A – Alternatives: What else can we try first?
I – Intuition: What does my gut say about this?
N – Nothing: What happens if we wait 10, 30, or 60 minutes?
This tool helps you turn fear into clarity and pressure into empowerment.
You never have to say yes, or no, without understanding the full picture.
Communication Skills That Protect Your Birth Plan
Advocacy is not about being confrontational, it’s about speaking clearly and staying aligned with your intentions, even when the room feels busy or the energy feels urgent.
Here are a few communication tools that I teach inside my birth classes online:
1. Practice Saying “No” With Confidence
“No, thank you. Can we discuss my alternatives?”
“No, I’d like more time to decide, please”
“No, that doesn’t align with my birth plan.”
Clear communication creates clear boundaries.
2. Use “I” Statements
“I feel more comfortable laboring upright.”
“I prefer intermittent monitoring so I can move freely.”
They reduce tension and increase collaboration.
3. Bring a Written Plan... But Also a Supportive Voice
Your birth plan is only as strong as the communication behind it. When your partner or doula knows your wishes clearly, they can reinforce your decisions if you’re tired, overwhelmed, or deep in labor.
Your voice matters. Practice it now so it feels natural later.
